Betsy: “Last weekend Mike and I took a quick weekend trip to the Sierra Nevadas. A cold front was set to come through the area Saturday making for some interesting weather. We spent Friday night in Death Valley and took a detour out of the park to get to Lone Pine as the main road west out of the park is still closed from floods earlier this year.

In Lone Pine we explored the Alabama Hills Scenic Area and the foothills of Mt. Whitney. We then drove north to Big Pine and explored the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest and went to see the Patriarch Grove at 11,000 ft. It was windy and 30F when we arrived at the top so we didn't stay long.

The winds picked up as we left and started gusting over 40mph as the cold front came through. We decided not to camp a second night and drove back to Vegas through blowing dust and rain. Loving the crazy fall weather out west!”
